Information & Communications Technology

The utilization of leading edge information and communications technology (ICT) is a critical business enabler for the Company.

An important initial task was the development of a robust and scalable ICT infrastructure to meet the current and future needs of the organization, starting with the provision of ICT services to 600 users. This included integrating different systems from the joint venture partners, migrating historical data from Bapco, and deploying key production and technical applications.

A major development, which is crucial to the effective redevelopment of the Field, involved enabling smart online access to field production data through a Wireless Digital Canopy data network, which allows real time monitoring of production. During the course of the year, 220 wells were automated with wireless transmitters, and plans finalized for rig communications and video surveillance of facilities.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a critical application, and the Company now has access to innovative techniques such as 3-D topographic imagery, which enables engineers to determine the suitability of surface locations from their computers. A second technique – calculating volumetric cut and fill requirements for facility sites, enables engineers to calculate the volume of fill required to level a site ready for drilling, by using digitized data. Tatweer is also developing more sophisticated subsurface modeling tools.
