Production & Field Development

Following the handover of the Bahrain Field in 1 December 2009, Tatweer undertook a detailed technical analysis of each reservoir, and introduced well-proven recovery technologies, including horizontal drilling and completion techniques new to the Bahrain Field to increase production.

The Company drilled 27 new oil wells (with 25 put on production), and 3 new Khuff gas wells. This contributed to a record black oil production exit rate of 35,120 barrels per day (bpd) at the end of 2010, representing a 30 per cent increase over the end of 2009 exit rate of 27,000 bpd. The average production rate for the year was 27,300 bpd, which was below target due to the majority of production taking place in the last five months of the year.

The delivery capacity of Non-Associated Gas (NAG) also reached record levels, with average annual deliverability of just over 1.5 billion cubic feet per day, enabling Tatweer to meet NAG nominations and peak demand throughout the year.

During the year, three new state-of-the-art Helmerich & Payne oil drilling rigs were contracted. These highly mobile, computer-controlled rigs provide enhanced levels of safety, efficiency and flexibility. Another key achievement was a significant improvement in time to market, with a reduction in hook-up times to ten days. Equally impressive was the improvement in the time required to move a rig between new locations. For example, from the time that a rig completes a well, it can be disassembled, moved to a new location, reassembled and begin drilling operations on a new well in just 18 hours, compared with the previous time of three days for such an operation.

Other achievements during the year include the contracting of four new workover rigs and the execution of 247 production rig jobs; 194 well stimulations, and 65 corrosion inhibition treatments on 65 Khuff gas wells. A total of 104 wells were converted from gas lift to beam lift, five new gas dehydration units were commissioned, and eight new test separators were installed. Maintenance, repairs and upgrades in 2010 totaled 315,000 man hours of work.
